Through this program that has existed since 2006, car owners can receive a Clean Pass sticker for their car, if they pass certain fuel efficiency requirements, allowing them to ride in the HOV lane regardless of the number of passengers in the vehicle.
The program was created to encourage the purchase and use of energy-efficient vehicles, through the incentive of an easier commute. A list of eligible vehicles can be found online through the DMV website and you can apply online or over the phone for your own sticker, which will remain with the car for its lifetime.
Over 25,000 stickers have been issued since the inception of the program throughout the State, with Nassau and Suffolk owning a lot of them, according to Department of Transportation Public Information Officer Eileen Peters.
