Earlier this month, the New York State Division of Consumer Protection and the State Tax Department warned consumers about phone and email scams from individuals claiming to be from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) or State Tax Department. These scammers have been threatening New Yorkers with fines, arrests, and other penalties if they don’t pay a false claim of unpaid taxes.
Through “spoofing” techniques, the phone numbers and emails appear to be from the IRS or another NYS department. Please remain cautious and look for the following if you are unsure:
· · The NYS Tax Department and the IRS will always contact you first by letter with a phone number to contact
· · Neither agency will ever request personal or financial information through email
· · Always end the call if someone calls, claiming to be from the Tax Department or IRS and threatens you
