Video - Unique Recipient of One of New York's Highest Honors It may have been the most unique presentation of New York’s Liberty Award to date. On Saturday, September 26th at Eisenhower Park, Senator Kemp Hannon presented Levittown teacher, Jennifer Mazzotta-Perretti, with one of New York’s highest honors, the New York State Senate Liberty Award.
“When I read about Ms. Mazzotta-Perretti’s heart-felt story, I was overwhelmed by her immense selflessness and sincere dedication as both a caring teacher and caring person,” said Senator Kemp Hannon (6th Senate District). “The Liberty Award is bestowed upon those rare citizens who truly go above and beyond to help their fellow New Yorkers,” said Hannon. “ I cannot think of a more unique act of kindness from a teacher than donating one of her kidneys to one of her students. Ms. Mazzotta-Perretti’s act of generosity certainly exemplifies what this prestigious award stands for,” the senator continued.
“We are friends for life,” said Mazzotta-Perretti about her student, Kevin O’Brien, 19, of Oyster Bay, who joined his teacher at Saturday’s ceremony. “I pray and hope he’ll go on and realize his dreams,” she said.
Senator Hannon presented the prestigious award during a re-dedication ceremony for the Organ Donor Rose Garden, planted by the Long Island chapter of Transplant Recipients International Organization, an organ donor advocacy group.
